Habitat and Mechanism
Brackish root bays, mangrove root islands, floating seed rafts, and the gate steps of the Rain-Vein Floating-Root Seedbank。Monsoon water should cross the root bays through a natural tidal window, while detachable seed rafts and mangrove root islands preserve salt-tolerant crops and wild seed stock. The city's Low-Frequency Flood Pump was started early on a fixed cycle. Its reverse pressure pulses drove polluted suspended silt back into the roots and coated the mussels' attachment points. The colony closed in unison nine seconds before the city alarm, showing that the harmful backflow began before the old mechanical sensors registered it.

The colony filters suspended particles from slow brackish water. Its closure interval is also an early, passive indicator of reversed pressure and polluted backflow. Reopening shows that oxygen exchange and the original filtration route have begun to recover without moving the animals.

Observation Rule
Fang and K do not touch, pry open, relocate, tag, lure, or redirect the mussels. Fang uses only non-invasive probes and water samples from outside the root colony. K disables active sonar, works on human infrastructure, and keeps active weapons stowed. The bypass line and original filtration route remain open, and the mussels reopen on their own timing.
At East Rain-Gate Root-Filter Bay, the colony closed before any pump vibration became audible. Fang lowered a salinity and pressure probe into the outer water layer without approaching the animals. K disabled active sonar, stayed on the old gate frame, and recorded the interval between pressure rise and shell closure with every active weapon stowed.
