Earthsong Cold-Spring Migration Gate

Earthsong Cold-Spring Migration Gate is a five-day field route where Fang and K document a local ecology through observation, distance, and response.

Day 01 / 09.19

Seventeen Seconds Before the Alarm

Sulfur-Crown Tube Worm ColonyLow Risk

Mist at No. 9 Steam-Spring Basin moved flat across the salt. Fang and I had not yet heard the pumping well start when the crimson crowns above the ivory mineral tubes began retracting in sequence from the city side. Fang left her temperature probe at the colony's edge. I shut down active scanning and let a passive seismometer record the low sound below us. Each rise in well pressure sent the retreat line across the bank seventeen seconds before the alarm.

Sulfur-Crown Tube Worm Colony Morning | Arrival and Trace
MORNINGThey were not retreating from us. They were making invisible superheated brine legible across the geothermal salt marsh. Fang told me not to mistake synchronized response for panic. I marked the first fracture on the map and stopped the scheduled pumping command before transmission. The crowns stayed withdrawn. We remained outside the colony, with active equipment off, and let the timing become evidence.
Sulfur-Crown Tube Worm Colony Noon | Close Observation
NOONBy noon, the line had shifted beneath the black-lava terrace. Fang sampled three water layers while I overlaid the order of crown retraction on the old geothermal-well record. The Subsurface Cold-Water Lens had once separated brine from the root zone. Desalination wells had drawn it into a thin sheet, allowing hot brine to rise through new fractures and replace it. The mineral tubes had not moved, but the crowns closed step by step from the hottest end, giving the pressure change a direction. Fang said the city believed it had removed only groundwater. It had also removed the habitat's insulation. I moved our safe route upwind and touched nothing. We already had enough evidence.
Sulfur-Crown Tube Worm Colony Evening | Withdrawal and Record
EVENINGIn the evening, we opened only one section of the old gravity-fed recharge gate. The spring mist was still dense when the first cool water entered the fracture. After the second low sound underground, the outer tube worms extended their crowns first. Crimson branching outlines returned to the water in clusters. Fang did not adjust their positions. She marked the line where cool water could once again hold down the hot brine. I locked the recharge flow within the natural seepage range and kept my weapon stowed. The reopening was not a performance. It marked the temperature boundary that would let every large animal behind them continue across the salt marsh.
「Fang marked the recovered cold-water line instead of the animals. I left the recharge flow inside the natural seepage range. We had not repaired the colony. We had stopped the city from stripping away the boundary it had been reading all along.」— K

The Ground the Beetles Refused

Salt-Porcelain Seed BeetleModerate

Salt-Crust Dung-Trace Slope should have offered the shortest route. Instead, the Salt-Porcelain Seed Beetles pushed their seed-rich dung balls into a broad curve, choosing rough lava over the white ground in the center. Fang stayed outside the trail and examined salt-tolerant seed left behind. I scanned the insect-free ground with thermal imaging. The surface was only a few degrees warmer than its surroundings, but heat had collected below it like an empty pot.

Salt-Porcelain Seed Beetle Morning | Arrival and Trace
MORNINGTheir porcelain-white elytra could shed heat, yet they still would not cross the center. The problem was not sunlight. Fang told me to find the last point where the rolling traces had run straight. I kept my weapon stowed and followed the edge instead of redirecting the insects. Those small balls had placed megafaunal nutrients, grass seed, and an underground fracture that had lost its cold water on the same map.
Salt-Porcelain Seed Beetle Noon | Close Observation
NOONAt noon, the trail divided into three. Fang opened one naturally split old ball. It held seeds from cold-spring grass, black-terrace sedge, and high-dike silvergrass. I inserted a fine probe only at the edge of the salt crust and left every nest opening intact. With the cold water gone, the central layer had become a thin, brittle cavity. Each time a distant extraction well increased pressure, hot air pulsed upward through hairline cracks. The beetles were not short of food. They were choosing ground where the seeds could still germinate. If the city kept pumping, the grass belt before the migration gate would break first, leaving the giant horned bovids only a route close to the high wall. When Fang packed away the sample, I marked the second well for shutdown.
Salt-Porcelain Seed Beetle Evening | Withdrawal and Record
EVENINGThe evening recharge water did not flood the salt crust. It spread slowly along Black-Lava Grass Seam. The first beetle stopped at the damp line and tested the ground several times with its broad shovel head before pushing its dung ball across. The others followed the same line without our guidance. Fang recorded the new route from a distance. I moved one loose city cable marker back onto its artificial base so they would not have to detour around it. Seed reached the bare ground before the migration gate again. The cool water was doing more than lowering the temperature. It was restoring soil that grass roots—and the life behind them—could trust.
「I marked the second extraction well for shutdown and left the rolling trail untouched. We did not choose a safer route for the beetles. We restored the cold-water boundary, and they showed us where living ground still began.」— K
Day 03 / 09.19

The Place Where Water Should Have Been

Cold-Pool Shield-Nosed RhinocerosHigh Risk

Only a gray-white mineral ring remained at Shield-Nose Cold Pool. An adult female stood between the basin and her calf. Her five-meter body did not advance, but her broad flat nasal shield remained pointed toward us. Fang stopped outside the territory and used her BCI to read heat moving through the lamellae along the animal's shoulders. I lowered my equipment and withdrew behind black rock.

Cold-Pool Shield-Nosed Rhinoceros Morning | Arrival and Trace
MORNINGThe mud on her nasal shield had dried into a thin crust. None of the three old pools held fresh digging marks. She was not guarding water. She was guarding a place where water should have been. When pressure rose again at a distant well, the calf moved into its mother's shadow. I marked the site High Risk—not because she meant to attack, but because we had taken away every safe direction she could retreat.
Cold-Pool Shield-Nosed Rhinoceros Noon | Close Observation
NOONLayered wallows remained across Rift Mud-Vein Terrace. Fang found mineral bands from different seasons in the cold mud. I followed the deepest scrape to an old valve locked shut by settlement. It had once let recycled water from the high dike seep back to the cold springs by gravity. Now it allowed extraction but no return flow. The female had not followed us, but her wide tracks always turned back at the same dry wall. Fang said a nasal shield could pry up salt crust, not a human one-way valve. I released the lock by hand and started no pump. High-elevation cool water was left to find the old mud vein on its own. The damp line deepening slowly through the ground was more reliable than any forced guidance.
Cold-Pool Shield-Nosed Rhinoceros Evening | Withdrawal and Record
EVENINGA small patch of dark mud appeared first. Then water began seeping from between the stones. The female waited a long time. Only after the calf caught the scent of moisture did she follow her own old tracks down. She pushed brittle salt crust aside with her nasal shield and widened the new pool into a shallow basin large enough for the calf. The copper lamellae along her shoulders cooled gradually in the steam. Fang recorded from high ground. I secured the bypass valve and withdrew without approaching. Once the cold pool returned, the Sulfur-Crown Tube Worm Colony's thermal boundary, the Salt-Porcelain Seed Beetles' grass seam, and a large-animal cooling point formed one connected route for the first time.
「I secured the bypass and moved away before they entered. We did not lead the mother back to water. We reopened the direction the city had closed, and she chose the old path herself.」— K
Day 04 / 09.20

When the City Stopped Lying for the Ground

Rift-Listening Wild Dog PackIntelligent

There were no calls on Tremor-Listening Wild Dog Ridge. Seven wild dogs stood on separate lava platforms, taking turns tapping short patterns with their forepaws. Their broad round ears turned toward the ground, while their ochre, black, and white patches kept clear distances in the sulfur mist. Fang quickly saw that the relay broke whenever it reached the old geothermal beacon. I recorded how they kept retreating to the same stable rock.

Rift-Listening Wild Dog Pack Morning | Arrival and Trace
MORNINGThis was not a confused pack. It was a route language with a false signal inserted into it. The animals did not approach us, and they did not chase the rhinoceros or beetles. They used position alone to pass the safest thermal window to the next member. If we wanted to find a route the giant bovids could use, we first had to stop the city from lying on the ground's behalf.
Rift-Listening Wild Dog Pack Noon | Close Observation
NOONThe beacon sent one fixed pulse every eight minutes at a frequency that almost imitated a pre-quake microtremor. Fang separated the pack's footfall rhythm into warning, passage, and withdrawal. On the back of the post, I found a pre-collapse diagnostic module. It had once tested sensors for an engineering crew, then continued broadcasting a false quake after maintenance ended. I cut only its output and kept the passive record. After the first silence, the lead animal did not advance at once. It waited until both flanks returned a stable rhythm, then crossed the post. Fang said this was neither domestication nor accidental avoidance. It was group memory checking the ground. The city's equipment had finally yielded the channel.
Rift-Listening Wild Dog Pack Evening | Withdrawal and Record
EVENINGBefore nightfall, Black-Lava Relay Trail joined into one complete rhythm again. Two animals crossed the narrow ridge first. A third held the high station, and the member traveling with a juvenile crossed last. They did not invite us to follow, but extended each safe thermal window clearly to Double-Crown Migration Gate. Fang transferred the pattern to low-power warning lights. I turned off the active radar that would have covered the ground's vibrations. A low bovid call came from the distance. The entire pack faced the same direction, then withdrew in order to a side ridge. They yielded the route and kept their own distance. Tomorrow, the real pressure would arrive from beyond that gate.
「I shut down the active radar and moved off the relay line. We did not make the pack lead us. We removed the city's false voice, and the ground became audible to them again.」— K
Day 05 / 09.21

When the Ancient Migration Route Opened Again

Lava-Vein Double-Crown Giant Bovid HerdExtremely Dangerous

The ground outside Double-Crown Migration Gate moved like another heart. An eleven-meter herd stood in the sulfur mist, its double-layered horn crowns amplifying the geothermal beacons' remaining fixed pulse into a low resonance. The gate-guarding bull did not charge. It stood broadside across the only gap between the mothers, calves, and high wall. Fang separated the herd's breathing, true microtremors, and the human-made rhythm with a distant, noninvasive BCI. I shut down every active instrument. Danger did not require an attack: if the false signal continued, the entire nursery group would mistake a closed city gate for its only retreat.

Lava-Vein Double-Crown Giant Bovid Herd Morning | Arrival and Trace
MORNINGThe bovids' horn crowns magnified each residual pulse, and every shift of their immense split hooves sent the salt marsh outward in a slow wave. I kept all active equipment off while Fang worked beyond the territorial line. The bull held the gap without advancing. We did not need to control the herd. We needed to remove the signal that had turned a sealed gate into a false route.
Lava-Vein Double-Crown Giant Bovid Herd Noon | Close Observation
NOONThe manual room still worked, but opening the gate was not the first step. Fang overlaid the Rift-Listening Wild Dog Pack's restored safety rhythm with the horn resonance and found a thirty-seven-second interval without natural microtremors. I cut the geothermal beacon output, then raised the gate only far enough to release cold mist. The bull lifted its crown and the pale heat-release windows along its neck opened one by one, but it did not move. Only when recharge water reached the dry pools did the cows allow their calves to approach the gate line. We used no weapons and forced no formation. We removed the city's false earthsong from their path.
Lava-Vein Double-Crown Giant Bovid Herd Evening | Withdrawal and Record
EVENINGOnce the first cold pool returned, the herd began to cross in maternal order. Calves stayed inside the formation. Adult cows used their immense crowns to keep them away from the sulfur-spring edge, and the gate-guarding bull left the dike last. Their steps shook the mud without striking the wall, a person, or another animal. Fang watched Salt-Porcelain Seed Beetles return to the hoofprints and said the route could finally work by itself again. I reset the sluice to open only when natural microtremors and cold-water level both allowed it.
「Extremely dangerous was not a reason to destroy them. It was a reminder that a city should never treat an ancient migration route as empty ground it can seal away.」— K
