Returning the Fjord's Time
The manta waited outside the gate. It did not threaten us or come closer. It only bent the whole aurora once along the edge of its wing. Fang said it was not lost. It was waiting. I started looking for whoever had closed the gate.
Field Observation
We climbed from Rockfall Cableway to the fjord's highest observation platform, overlooking Broken-Needle Gate and the radar ring. From there, the maintenance corridor led into the de-energized array without crossing the manta's flight path. After the shutdown, we withdrew to the gate's side platform and watched from a distance.
Morning · Broken-Needle Gate
The thirty-meter manta hung above a band of luminous magnetoplankton. Its turquoise wing channels curved the aurora without a hint of aggression. Fang read its rhythm through the BCI from the inner platform. I stayed low at the outer edge and confirmed the distance. Divine scale did not make it an enemy.
Noon · Old Radar Ring
Fang read the manta's four-part rhythm from outside the ring. I went in and cut the cable that was still drawing charge from the storm. No weapon. No bait. The manta was not the problem. An old system had forgotten to shut down. When the ring went dark, the conflicting pulse disappeared.
Evening · Aurora-Tide Fjord
Once the ring fell silent, the manta passed through the gate. The limpet colony turned. The mist petrels returned to the steam columns. The metallic sound of mass molting rose beneath the bridge, and the seals began their return migration. Fang smiled once. We had conquered nothing. We had only returned their time.
Habitat Causality
The collapsed radar ring was still absorbing storm charge through an underground cable and broadcasting a pulse that conflicted with the manta's migration frequency. The interference displaced mist petrels, concentrated the crabs' shell carrying, delayed the seals' return, and stopped the manta outside the gate. Cutting the cable removed the false rhythm, allowing the manta's migration field to resynchronize spawning, course changes, molting, and return migration across the fjord.
Species Behavior
The non-aggressive manta filter-feeds on luminous magnetoplankton at the sea surface and in the steam layer. It glides along storm margins with magnetic organs in its wing membranes and waits when its route is blocked. Its passage, rather than predation, calibrates the living rhythms of four other species.
