The manta filter-feeds on luminous magnetoplankton at the sea surface and in the steam layer. It does not prey on the fjord's other four recorded species and shows no aggression toward Fang or K. When a conflicting radar pulse blocks its route, it waits outside the gate instead of forcing passage.

Storm margins, sea surfaces, and geothermal steam layers around Broken-Needle Thermal Fjord。Magnetic levitation organs in the wing membranes let the manta glide along the edge of a storm. Its migration field changes polarity and airflow throughout the fjord, triggering Ash Compass Limpets to spawn, Heat-Vein Mist Petrels to change course, Magnet-Whisker Crabs to molt, and Lava-Ridge Magnetic Seals to begin their return migration.

FIELD BEHAVIOR

Behavior and Ecological Role

The manta filter-feeds on luminous magnetoplankton at the sea surface and in the steam layer. It does not prey on the fjord's other four recorded species and shows no aggression toward Fang or K. When a conflicting radar pulse blocks its route, it waits outside the gate instead of forcing passage.

The manta is the divine calibrator of the regional ecological clock, not the apex predator of its food web. Its passage synchronizes reproduction, course changes, molting, and return migration across four other species.

Form and Identification

This record covers one migrating adult. Juvenile groups with wings not yet mineralized may exist offshore, but none were encountered during this expedition.

  • Deep indigo skin
  • Translucent turquoise magnetic channels through the wing membranes

FIELD ETHICS

Observation Rule

Fang and K never lure, pursue, attack, or touch the manta. They identify the human system disrupting its migration, shut that system down by hand, and record the animal's passage from a distant platform.

At Broken-Needle Gate, the manta waited above a band of glowing magnetoplankton. It neither threatened nor approached. One movement of its wing bent the entire aurora. Fang recognized waiting rather than disorientation, and K began tracing what had closed the route.
