Broken-Needle Thermal Fjord

Magnetite-rich basalt needles have absorbed years of storm charge. As tides rise and geothermal vents breathe, the rock releases that charge slowly. Cold seawater, turquoise hot springs, sulfur deposits, and a collapsed prewar radar array create a layered habitat where compasses drift in a repeating cycle and reflected signals can mislead even reliable electronic navigation.

Location
A narrow sea-eroded volcanic fjord southwest of Aleutian Storm Harbor, formed around a flooded crater, black-sand tidal basins, and an abandoned radar relay station.

Mechanical compasses at Aleutian Storm Harbor began repeating the same error, while a powerless radar relay returned signals at regular intervals. Fang and K entered to determine whether the anomaly threatened the supply window. They avoided disturbing the nursery bay and traced the signal to an old radar ring whose automatic discharge was blocking the migration of a non-aggressive Thunder-Canopy Manta.

How Broken-Needle Thermal Fjord Works

Periodic polarity reversals connect the whole fjord. Geothermal algae feed Ash Compass Limpets; their shells and eggs support Magnet-Whisker Crabs; the crabs turn black sand and open habitat for microbes and steam gnats; Heat-Vein Mist Petrels eat the gnats and spread heat-tolerant spores; Lava-Ridge Magnetic Seals feed on crabs and cold-water fish while raising pups in warm springs. The migrating Thunder-Canopy Manta does not prey on these species, but its magnetic field synchronizes their spawning, turns, molts, and return migrations.

Observation Ethic

Hunting here means observation, sampling, rerouting, and coexistence. Fang and K do not attack any species. When a nursery group blocks the shortest path, they change their route instead of forcing the animals aside; when the final migration is obstructed, they shut down the human system causing the disruption.

Five-Day Route

  1. Read the alignment of Ash Compass Limpets at Black-Sand Needle Beach.
  2. Follow the altered flight of Heat-Vein Mist Petrels along Geothermal Mist Ridge.
  3. Trace conducting underground cables through shell fragments at Collapsed Radar Reef.
  4. Bypass the seal nursery at Steam Nursery Bay by taking Rockfall Cableway.
  5. At Broken-Needle Gate, read the manta's rhythm and shut down Old Radar Ring so the fjord's ecological clock can resynchronize.

Ash Compass Limpet

The limpets graze chemosynthetic algae in geothermal fissures. Their concentric shell plates accumulate magnetite, and entire colonies align along invisible magnetic lines before reversing direction together when the field's polarity flips.

Heat-Vein Mist Petrel

The flock glides at a distance through geothermal mist and avoids the warmest steam column before contact with the disturbance. Each coordinated turn produces a soft static halo and matches another sensor spike from the ruined antenna field.

Magnet-Whisker CrabDay 03

Magnet-Whisker Crab

The crabs use two long magnetosensory whiskers to find limpet eggs, algae clumps, and detritus after low tide. They drag discarded shells to stabilize burrow entrances and follow established carrying routes across the reef. They remain wary but do not attack; when observers step outside the route, they continue working. When a group exchanges shells, the movement produces a brief wave of metallic sound.

The seals feed on reef crabs and cold-water fish. Adult females guard the warm-spring nursery together, warning approaching animals or people by slapping the water, calling low, and blocking the channel rather than charging. They watch until the last pup returns to the warm pool, then ease their vigilance and look away once the observers take the upper route.

Thunder-Canopy Manta

The manta filter-feeds on luminous magnetoplankton at the sea surface and in the steam layer. It does not prey on the fjord's other four recorded species and shows no aggression toward Fang or K. When a conflicting radar pulse blocks its route, it waits outside the gate instead of forcing passage.
