The flash had not started. The herd flattened its ears first. Fang signaled me not to chase them. I marked only the direction they withdrew. The cyan and magenta veins reacted twelve seconds before the city alarm. Enough to prove they were not intruders.
Field Observation
From Spore-Rain Observation Deck, we took the low-heat path south to Waste-Heat Orchard, keeping clear of the spider-web belt. The herd's tracks crossed a shallow cooling channel and climbed Veinlight Moss Slope. We stayed at least one herd's length behind, then followed the condensation flow downhill to Cooling Channel Outlet and returned to the main route along the maintenance walk.
Morning · Waste-Heat Orchard
Every long ear dropped before the exposure sequence. Fang crouched at the orchard edge and watched. I recorded the herd's path toward the cooling channel and did not close the distance. Their light went low before the city's warning arrived.
Noon · Veinlight Moss Slope
Spores clung to the hares' belly fur as they crossed the moss slope. Their ear veins released excess heat into the condensation mist. Fang said they were moving an invisible forest. I watched her steady herself on the slick grade and gave one answer: do not lose the transport crew.
Evening · Cooling Channel Outlet
The sensor gate marked every pair of luminous ears as a threat. Fang's BCI found only overheating and escape. I switched the gate to passive mode. The herd passed through the lane we left between us. Not one animal needed to be driven away.
Habitat Causality
Low-grade waste heat builds before the retired exposure sequence fires. The hares vent that heat through photonic veins in their ears and retreat toward the cooling channel twelve seconds before the alarm. Their movement carries fungal spores and seeds across the channel, while the false light band and the city's sensor gate interrupt a route that normally renews the understory.
Species Behavior
Veinlight Ear Hares graze on electro-moss and tender fungal-ring shoots. They move in small groups, lower both ears together before the false pulse, release heat into the mist, and carry spores in their belly fur. They avoid overheated light and use an open passage without threatening observers.
