The Moths Left Before the Rain
Moisture at Acid-Rain Leaf-Edge Station was uneven. Water still fell from the leaf tips, but the fungal light between the buttress roots had dimmed. The moths left the upstream leaves before the rain. Fang measured the water in their wing veins. I shut down the active lights and marked the load-bearing path, wind, and retreat line. The first anomaly was evidence, not a threat.

Field Observation
We took a low-noise supply boat from the South Seas outpost to the edge of the buffer island, then followed a root walkway beneath the giant leaves to Acid-Rain Leaf-Edge Station. From there, a safety line led uphill under the same leaf canopy to Dew-Vein Fungal-Lantern Slope without crossing the main acid-rain flow. In the evening we followed the moths across Spore-Drop Watershed Ridge and compared passive humidity readings upstream and downstream.
Morning · Acid-Rain Leaf-Edge Station
Dew-Vein Mycelial Moths departed the upstream giant leaves before rainfall. Fang recorded their reduced wing-vein moisture without touching them. I kept every active weapon stowed, switched off the lights, and watched from outside their flight path. Their early departure showed that the canopy had already been losing mist for some time.
Noon · Dew-Vein Fungal-Lantern Slope
Fang collected only fungal flowers and dew that had fallen naturally. I secured the safety line from beneath the leaves and recorded the pollination belt contracting downstream. The fungal flowers could still reduce the acidity of the water, but without a continuous supply the moths' pollination and spore dispersal were being compressed into a smaller part of the canopy.
Evening · Spore-Drop Watershed Ridge
The moths resumed gathering dew after crossing the ridge. Passive readings confirmed a sharp difference in humidity between its two sides. We did not follow the animals farther. Their restored rhythm had already placed the extraction source in the upstream Mist-Condenser Tower belt.
Habitat Causality
Giant leaves intercept acid rain above the forest. Mineral films and symbiotic fungi reduce its acidity before the water enters the root channels and the luminous Mycelial River below. Dew-Vein Mycelial Moths collect moisture in hollow wing veins, use abdominal symbionts to neutralize trace acidity, feed on luminous fungal flowers, and carry spores toward drier canopy cracks. Continuous extraction by the old condenser towers reduced upstream humidity before rainfall, causing early departure, a downstream shift in pollination, and a measurable break in dew gathering across the watershed ridge.
Species Behavior
The moths are nocturnal and non-aggressive. They normally remain on upstream leaf edges until rain begins, moving between fungal flowers while carrying spores on their legs. During this encounter they left early, gathered less dew on the upstream side, and recovered their normal rhythm only beyond the ridge. Fang and I treated those choices as a map. We did not chase them or use equipment to force them off their chosen path.
「Restoring a passage does not mean giving the forest an order. It means taking our hand out of the waterway. Fang was right. The only system we needed to control was our own.」
