We Restored the River, Not the Herd
The herd was drifting toward the outpost, but it was not following us or the buildings. It was following moisture that the Mycelial River no longer carried. Fang read the water response without entering its migration line. I kept the route open and went back to the machine.

Field Observation
We returned from the condenser control level to the main Mycelial River corridor and established a remote observation point at Canopy-Crown Migration Gate before the herd reached the outpost branch. Fang's reading of the groundwater response led us back to Third Mist-Condenser Tower while we kept the herd's buffer clear. After restoring the water, we followed the revived river downstream to Mycelial-River Release Corridor and watched the whole habitat turn back toward its earlier routes.
Morning · Canopy-Crown Migration Gate
The elephants followed the scent and pressure of the missing river toward the outpost branch. Fang used non-invasive BCI sensing to read their groundwater perception. I stayed outside the migration line, marked the load-bearing roots, wind, and retreat path, and kept every active weapon stowed. Their course followed lost moisture and a broken seed corridor, not human facilities.
Noon · Third Mist-Condenser Tower
I physically shut down the faulty mist collection and concentrated acidic discharge. Fang directed gravity overflow back into a branch of the Mycelial River. The cyan-violet channel began to glow again before we made any attempt to move the herd. We changed the equipment and left the animals their own decision.
Evening · Mycelial-River Release Corridor
The herd detected the returning moisture and turned back into the forest. Dew-Vein Mycelial Moths returned to the leaf edges, Rainbow-Sac Tree Frogs crossed the wet pools again, Root-Channel Armored Crabs reopened clean channels, and the Mist-Sail Arboreal Lizard withdrew toward the upper wet branches. Five species changed direction after one human fault was removed.
Habitat Causality
The condenser's backup system drew too much mist from the canopy and released concentrated acidic water upstream. That broke the vertical water route linking leaf edges, tree pools, root channels, wet canopy bridges, and the herd's seasonal seed corridor. The elephants followed the lost groundwater signal toward the outpost. Stopping extraction and discharge, then opening gravity overflow, restored the Mycelial River before the herd entered human infrastructure. The herd and four smaller species returned to their own habitat layers without coercion.
Species Behavior
The elephants moved as several calm matrilineal families. Their wide foot pads tracked underground water, while their mossy crown ridges carried seeds and fungal spores. They did not charge, threaten, or pursue us. Their course shifted only after the water signal returned, showing that the migration was a response to habitat loss rather than aggression.
